Single-ply waterproof membrane roofing systems, in contrast to layered and multi-layer systems, utilize a single-layer flexible waterproof membrane. They typically include structural layers, vapor barriers, insulation layers, and waterproof layers. These layers are combined sequentially using methods such as mechanical fastening, full adhesion, or loose laying.
Structural layers include traditional concrete, steel, or wood structures; vapor barriers include polyethylene (PE) film and aluminum foil; insulation layers include rock wool, XPS, EPS, or polyisocyanurate (Polyiso) boards; and waterproof layers include thermoplastic PVC, TPO membranes, and some high-performance modified bitumen membranes.
Single-ply flexible roofing systems are characterized by their light weight, good waterproof and insulation performance, quick installation, easy maintenance, long lifespan, and superior long-term cost-effectiveness. In steel structures, they effectively solve problems such as water leakage, cold bridges, condensation, noise, and complex curved surfaces in traditional roofing systems.
They are widely used in projects such as stadiums, exhibition halls, airports, industrial plants, logistics centers, shopping malls, hospitals, and train stations.
System Classification
◆ Ballast System
The membrane is loosely laid on the substrate. Rough substrates require a suitable protective layer. Adjacent membranes overlap by at least 80mm, and the overlaps are hot-air welded to create a continuous, seamless waterproof layer. The roof perimeter and penetrations are treated with special flashing materials. Round, smooth, or polished pebbles or concrete blocks (minimum 50mm thick) are used as ballast to secure the membrane.
Its features include quick installation, low installation costs, high fire rating, and excellent weather resistance, suitable for various substrates.
◆ Mechanical Fastening System
The membrane is loosely laid on the substrate. Screws and strips or washers are used to mechanically fasten the membrane at the overlaps. Adjacent membranes overlap by at least 120mm at the long edges and at least 80mm at the short edges. The seams are hot-air welded to form a continuous, seamless waterproof layer. The roof perimeter and penetrations are treated with special flashing materials.
Its features include strong wind load resistance, low system cost, and light weight, suitable for roof structures that cannot withstand ballast loads but can be mechanically fastened.
◆ Fully Adhered System
The membrane is fully adhered to the substrate using adhesive. Adjacent membranes overlap by at least 80mm, and the overlaps are hot-air welded to create a continuous, seamless waterproof layer. The roof perimeter and penetrations are treated with special flashing materials.
Its features include light weight, strong wind load resistance, and aesthetics. It is suitable for low-slope roofs, irregularly shaped roofs, and roofs with limited load-bearing capacity. It can also be used for complex structures, but substrate compatibility with the adhesive must be ensured.
